In Diabolik Lovers, several demon races exist within the Demon World. Only a portion of their hierarchy and traits are officially described in the main games, guides, and character materials.
Demon World Hierarchy[]
The series establishes two broad categories of demonic races:
- Superior Demon Races: Ancestors (Founders), Vampires (Bat clan), Vibora (Snake clan), Wolves (Wolf clan), Adler (Eagle clan)
- Inferior Demon Races: Ghouls (Crow clan) and various unnamed lower races
These rankings appear in character materials and official lore references across the visual novel series.
Ancestors (Founders / First Blood Clan)[]
Ancestors are the original and most powerful demon race. Canon information states:
- They possess the core abilities of the four Superior races (Vampire, Vibora, Wolf, and Adler).
- They do not share these races’ weaknesses.
- They have heightened physical abilities: strength, speed, regenerative power, and enhanced senses (sight, smell, hearing).
- They can use magic and summon familiars.
- They can only be killed by complete decapitation.
- They are capable of taking multiple animal forms (bat, snake, wolf, eagle), reflecting their origin as the progenitors of all other demon races.
- They are considered the strongest beings in both the Demon World and Human World.
The Tsukinami brothers (Carla and Shin) are confirmed Ancestors.
Vampires (Bat Clan)[]
Vampires are among the major Superior races. Confirmed traits include:
- Pureblood vampires exhibit high strength, speed, rapid regeneration, and heightened senses.
- They can use magic and summon familiars.
- They can teleport and may fly during the full moon (documented in character materials and events).
- They can only be killed by decapitation or overwhelming physical harm exceeding their regenerative limits.
- Their weaknesses are:
- Silver
- Reduced vision in bright sunlight
- They can consume human food, but it provides no nourishment; blood is their essential source.
Impure Vampires[]
Impure vampires are humans turned into vampires.
- They have weakened versions of pureblood abilities (strength, speed, regeneration).
- They can teleport and may fly during a full moon.
- They do not use magic or summon familiars.
- They are more vulnerable to lethal injuries.
- Unlike pureblood vampires, they see normally in sunlight.
- Human food nourishes them, though blood remains their primary sustenance.
Ghouls (Crow Clan)[]
Ghouls are explicitly described as inferior demons:
- They possess no magic and are treated similarly to human servants or slaves within the Demon World.
- They can transform into crows.
- They are ranked lowest among known demon races.
Vibora (Snake Clan)[]
Little direct information is provided in canon sources, but what is confirmed includes:
- They are acknowledged as one of the Superior races.
- They historically maintained alliances with vampires (mentioned in character-related materials).
- Their traits are implied to be serpent-inspired; however, venom or similar abilities are not explicitly confirmed in official sources.
Wolves (Wolf Clan)[]
Official material identifies them as one of the Superior races, but:
- Detailed traits are not provided in the games or official profiles.
- Their characteristics remain largely unknown.
Adler (Eagle Clan)[]
Another officially named Superior race, but:
- No confirmed abilities or biological traits have been released in canon.
- Only the clan's symbol and name indicate an eagle-associated lineage.
Notes[]
- All demon races are capable of consuming blood, though only vampires rely on it as their main source of sustenance.
- Ancestors can use all known forms of animal familiars from the Superior races.
- Official websites sometimes list the Tsukinami brothers and Kino as “vampires” to conceal spoiler details:
- Tsukinami brothers → actually Ancestors
- Kino → race unconfirmed but not a vampire
Trivia[]
- Víbora (Spanish) means “viper,” while Adler (German) means “eagle.”
- “Vampire” is also the English term for certain blood-feeding bats.
- In Japanese materials, the demon race of the bat is written using the English word “vampire” rather than the Japanese term kyūketsuki.
- All demon races except the Ancestors are based on specific animal lineages.
